Guided by a therapist, couples gain insight into relational patterns while practicing skills that foster connection, accountability, and meaningful change.
Choosing the Right Therapy Format
Therapy is not one-size-fits-all. Different formats offer unique benefits depending on your goals, preferences, and the level of support you are seeking.
Traditional therapy (50-minute sessions) is well suited for individuals or couples seeking steady, ongoing support. This format allows time to build insight, practice skills between sessions, and make gradual, sustainable progress. While progress may feel slower for complex concerns, it offers consistency, structure, and flexibility for long-term growth.
Intensive therapy (90-minute sessions) is ideal for individuals or couples wanting deeper, more focused work in a shorter period of time. Extended sessions allow space to address complex or entrenched concerns, work through relational impasses, or accelerate progress when traditional sessions feel limiting. Because of the depth of work, intensives can feel emotionally demanding and may not be appropriate for all clients or concerns.
Group therapy is best suited for those who benefit from shared learning, connection, and accountability. Groups provide a supportive environment to learn skills, gain perspective, and normalize challenges through interaction with others facing similar concerns. While group settings offer powerful opportunities for growth, they may provide less individualized attention than individual or couples sessions.
Selecting the right format is a collaborative process, and recommendations are made based on your goals, needs, and clinical appropriateness.

Insurance Information
We accept some insurance plans through the Headway platform, which allows you to verify coverage and benefits prior to scheduling. Using insurance is always optional, and you are welcome to explore whether this feels like the right choice for you. You can check if your insurance is accepted at Erin Southerington, LCMFT
A brief note about insurance: billing insurance requires the identification of a mental health diagnosis, which is standard practice for individual therapy. Intensive sessions are not eligible for insurance reimbursement, and couples counseling is typically not covered by insurance. When insurance is used for couples work, at least one partner must complete an individual intake assessment during which a diagnosis is identified and discussed, and sessions must focus on reducing symptoms related to that diagnosis.
Mission Statement
At Waves of Change, our mission is to empower individuals, couples, and families to create lasting, meaningful change through compassionate, evidence-based therapy.
Our Philosophy
At Waves of Change, we believe that meaningful change begins within and unfolds through intentional, supported effort over time. Life’s challenges—whether experienced individually or within relationships—can feel overwhelming, but they also offer opportunities for growth, insight, and transformation.
Our approach is collaborative, respectful, and grounded in evidence-based practices. We view clients as active participants in their own change process and work alongside them to increase self-awareness, strengthen emotional regulation, improve communication, and shift patterns that no longer serve them. Therapy is tailored to each person or relationship, honoring unique experiences, values, and goals.
We are committed to creating a therapeutic space that feels safe, supportive, and empowering. Whether engaging in individual, couples, group, or intensive therapy, our focus remains on helping clients develop the clarity, skills, and confidence needed to navigate life’s waves and create lasting change.
